The department of General Surgery carries a wide range of specialty and sub-specialty surgeries including:
Head and Neck Surgery
- Thyroid evaluation and treatment of thyroid malignancies and associated disease
- Cancers of the oral cavity, hypopharynx, cervical, serophogus and others
- Salivary gland disease including malignancies
- Multi-disciplinary participation including plastic and reconstructive surgery
Hepatobiliary and Laparoscopic Surgery
- Management of common problems of stone and cancers of the gall bladder, liver and biliary tract
- Laparoscopic surgery to address problems of biliary stones, peptic ulcers and liver cysts needing drainage
Breast and General Surgery
- Breast screening programs
- Multi-disciplinary approach to breast cancer management
- Surgery of the gastro-intestinal tract including surgery for cancers of the stomach, pancreas, colon and colorectal surgery

Instructions before Surgery
- The day before your surgery, do not eat or drink after midnight. Please follow any instructions given to you by your doctor about your medications.
- Inform you doctor immediately if you develop a cold, cough, fever or chills.
- If you are allowed home on the day of your surgery, be sure someone is there to take you home or be with you for 24 hours after the surgery.
Instructions before Pediatric Surgery
- If your baby is less than 6 months old, you can feed him or her as you usually would until 4 hours before the time you were asked to arrive at the hospital.
- Baby may continue to have water, breast milk or clear apple juice 2 hours before surgery time.
- If your child is older than 6 months old, he or she should have not have any food, dairy products of juices with pulp after midnight, but may have clear apple juice or water until 3 hours before the arrival to the hospital.
Things to Remember the Morning of Surgery
- You may want to take a shower the morning of surgery.
- Brush teeth but do not swallow the water.
- Please do not wear any make-up, finger or nail polish.
- If you have long hair, braid it or tie back with rubber band.
- Wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
- Please leave all valuables (money and jewelry) at home.
